Stacy Long will return to Stevenage Borough in the Capital One Cup
Wimbledon’s summer signing Stacy Long returns to his old haunt tonight when the Dons travel to Stevenage Borough for the first round of the Capital One Cup.
The 27-year-old midfielder played 33 times for Stevenage last season, scoring twice, before joining the Dons on a free transfer in June.
Long spent three years at Stevenage and is looking forward to the tie, although any reunion with old friends will be delayed until after the final whistle.
“I’ve had experience when I’ve gone back to old clubs and I’ve always found that you cannot play the occasion you have to play the game,” he said. “That 90 minutes is no different from another 90 minutes.
“Of course you see old friends, staff and the crowd, and the home stadium where I’ve spent three years but you have got to forget all that and if you want to see friends, see them afterwards.”
And should Long score at his old stomping ground, he insists he will try to keep celebrations muted.
The former Ebbsfleet and Notts County star said: “I think wild celebrations are a little disrespectful to the fans. I can understand how some players do celebrate, it is emotional when you score a goal.
“But hopefully I will score and if I celebrate it is not a personal attack on anyone, it is just the elation.”
