Brooklands College student Geordie Logan has beaten 3,000 runners from around the world in one of Cuba’s annual Marabana international road races.
The 16-year-old, in his first year of a BTEC national diploma for sports and exercise, made the trip with Hercules Wimbledon Running Club , with whom he trains six times a week.
During their visit to Cuba, the contingent stayed in basic accommodation at a Cuban college behind their National Olympic Stadium.
Geordie said: “The dormitories were very basic and water was only available twice each day. It is a poor area and it took some time to get used to the 35C heat.”
Not only did he win, Geordie set a personal best for 5km, adding: ‘The adrenalin pumped through me and that helped me to take the race even more seriously.”
Geordie ultimately has his sights on the Olympics 3km steeplechase.
“In Cuba, I was inspired by two local boxers to carry on and keep training hard to get where I want to be – the Olympics!”
