Yearling entries for the 2011 running of the Group One Investec Derby must be made by 12 noon next Tuesday, December 1, 2009.
The initial entry stage, at a fee of £400, offers exceptional value and is the most cost-effective way of aiming a horse at the world’s premier Classic, which will have a prize fund of at least £1.25 million.
The 232nd running of the Investec Derby takes place at Epsom Downs on Saturday, June 4, 2011, and those entered at the yearling stage will pay no more than £6,900 to take their place in the final line-up.
For any horse not entered at the yearling stage, connections have the opportunity to enter as a three-year-old for £8,000. That second entry stage closes on Tuesday, April 5, 2011. The total in fees paid by a 2011 Investec Derby runner from the second entry stage is £20,500.
Any late-developing types that might burst onto the scene can be supplemented at the final stage on Monday, May 30, 2011, at a cost of £75,000.
Sea The Stars, himself a yearling entry, was the brilliant victor of the 2009 Investec Derby in an unbeaten season that saw him clinch six Group One triumphs and the Cartier Horse Of The Year accolade.
The John Oxx-trained colt proved one of the greatest three-year-olds of modern times, being the first horse to win the stanjames.com 2000 Guineas, Investec Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
First staged in 1780 when Sir Charles Bunbury’s Diomed prevailed, the Investec Derby is the original Derby and is open to three-year-old entire colts and fillies. The official entry form for the 2011 Investec Derby can be downloaded from the Weatherbys website www.weatherbys.co.uk.
