Monye calls for England players to up their game

Harlequins winger Ugo Monye says every England player must take the responsibility to up their game if they are to enjoy a successful Six Nations campaign.

The 26-year-old showed glimpses of his best form in Saturday’s 19-6 defeat to New Zealand - including one fine try-saving tackle - having returned to his natural position out wide after frustrating outings against Australia and Argentina.

The squad - that has been badly affected by injuries - has come in for criticism having managed only one win from three matches this autumn while playing a conservative brand of rugby.

And Monye believes there is plenty to be done if England are to improve on last year’s second place showing behind Grand Slam winners Ireland.

“People have got to take the responsibility of going back to their clubs and working on their game,” he said.

“There is a really intensive period of Heineken Cup and Premiership rugby over Christmas and we have to work hard to maintain and improve our form.

“When we get back for the Six Nations we need to hit the ground running.”

Monye admitted his torrid outing at full-back against Argentina was his lowest point as a player, but welcomed his return to the wing at the weekend that saw an improved performance from all concerned.

“The autumn was frustrating. The first two games at full-back were a challenge,” he said.

“The Argentina game was the worst game I’ve played in my life, so it was good to be back on the wing and show some of my form again.

“I’m a lot more comfortable on the wing. It is my natural position.

“It was nice to see people having a crack at things regardless of field positions. We threw everything at them and challenged them. It gives us something to build on.”

Flanker Lewis Moody’s all-action displays this autumn have seen some pundits call for his elevation to captain, but Monye remained squarely behind skipper Steve Borthwick.

“Lewis has been the standout player. His commitment, passion and selflessness to throw his body around for 80 minutes,” he said.

“People can use him an example, he is an outstanding and a true leader. I think we all need a bit more of that.

“Borthers had one of the best games I’ve seen him have in a long time in an England jersey. He is a great captain and has the respect of both the players and coaches.”

*Ugo Monye and Danny Care will be switching on the Twickenham town centre Christmas lights tonight at 5.30pm.
