Sutton Cricket Club skipper Phil Sampson predicts there will be plenty more twists and turns to come after a freak result sent his side back to the top of the Surrey Championship Premier Division table at the weekend.

Sampson’s side bounced back from last week’s defeat to Reigate Priory by crushing hapless Guildford by six wickets having bowled out the visitors - who were 37 for one - for just 58-runs.

The captain claimed figures of 5-40 - with opening bowling partner Andy Sartor bagging 4-15 - before his team knocked off the runs for the loss of four wickets as the game ended inside three and a half hours.

Priory had knocked the Sutton outfit off the summit with their triumph over the Cheam Road outfit last week, but were held by bottom-club Spencer who had a 49-run ninth wicket partnership to thank for claiming a winning draw on Saturday.

And the former Surrey pace bowler, whose side has twice been frustrated by last wicket partnerships in recent weeks, is expecting more of the same ups-and-downs over the last seven games of the season.

“Yes, the ball swung a bit and seamed a bit, but we just bowled exceptionally well and their batsmen played a few silly shots. It is the lowest score I’ve seen in my time here,” he said.

“Cricket is a funny game and that is why we love it. The suspense of it all is gripping and I’m pretty sure there will be plenty more twists and turns between now and the end of the season.

“It was great to bounce back like we did after last week and Spencer did us a huge favour.

“We could have an extra 18 points after those games against Weybridge and Banstead, but I think the five win-or-lose 50 over matches at the end of the season could see things change quite a bit.”

Neil Baker’s Spencer restricted Priory to 166-9 from 66 overs thanks to 4-29 from Jimmy Birt, before Josh Lawrence’s unbeaten 92 helped the visitors to four points as they battle against the drop.

Relegation rivals Weybridge were edged out of it in a thriller at Hanger Hill as visitors Cobham Avorians - with the help of Ben Chapman’s 54 - recovered from 98 for five to chase down their total of 171 all out with just one wicket to spare.

Earlier, Zafar Ansari’s 50 had helped his side re-build from 59 for four, as Steve Naylor (5-52) and Jamie Lawrence (4-51) took a wrecking ball to their batting line-up.

Wimbledon took it down to the wire as they claimed a winning draw at Sunbury after the hosts had posted 226 for seven thanks to Oliver Roland-Jones’ 112.

Skipper Sean Davies’ men never really got going in reply, but managed to reach 179 with nine wickets down to claim four points.

Dan Euston’s 71 ensured Malden Wanderers were also on the right side of a draw as they piled up 253-6 against struggling Banstead.

Skipper Giles Puckle’s men couldn’t make sufficient inroads as opposite number Jak Martin played an unbeaten captain’s knock of 74 to frustrate the hosts.
