Sutton United boss Paul Doswell is set to add former Rushden & Diamonds centre back Justin Roberts to his ranks after a month’s worth of knock backs saw him finally shut the door on midfielder Kelvin McIntosh.

Roberts, who will complete his signing after Saturday’s friendly trip to Basingstoke Town, has agreed terms on a deal to switch to Gander Green Lane having ended last season with Ryman League Premier Division rivals Tooting & Mitcham.

Former Bromley midfielder Kenny Beaney appears likely to follow suit having also confirmed he would like to be part of Doswell’s plans next season subject to the offer of scholarship to an American university.

McIntosh, who featured in four games for United at the end of last season, has been uncontactable in recent weeks leading to the manager to cut ties with the Oxford-based former Hampton & Richmond Borough man.

His snub follows the decisions of Charlie Hearn and Hasim Deen to turn down moves to United, but the Sutton chief remains optimistic over the resources at his disposal.

“We’ve missed out on three, but it looks like we’ll get at least two in so we will only be one light,” he said.

“I still maintain we are in better shape than we were this time last year.

“Justin - who is 22-years-old - is another player that fits our profile of youthful and energetic players.

“Kelvin is out of the picture as far as I’m concerned. Even if he turns up on my doorstep there is no going back on that now.”

Sutton start their pre-season schedule on Saturday against Basingstoke as they build towards high-profile clashes with Brentford, Crystal Palace and Premier League side Tottenham Hotspurs.

“We’ve not been in this position for a long time where we have had three League sides visit Gander Green Lane during pre-season,” added Doswell.

“It has got to be one of the best pre-season fixture lists and the players are really looking forward to it.”
