Surrey star Matt Spriegel is hoping a return to form with Surrey Championship side Banstead and the end of his university exams can see him force his way into the Brown Caps’ County Championship side.

The 22-year-old Loughborough University student hit a superb 83 an claimed 4-82 as his club side held on to frustrate league leaders Sutton - defied by a tenth-wicket partnership for a second consecutive week - in forcing a draw in Saturday’s clash at Cheam Road.

Spriegel, who made his championship debut last year, has largely featured in Surrey’s one-day and Twenty20 side’s so far this summer and reckons a spell in club and county second team cricket can re-ignite his summer.

“It has been a pretty frantic few months and now I want to just relax into things and get some runs and wickets,” he said.

“The way everything has gone I haven’t had many good opportunities to impress in the one day and Twenty20 teams, so hopefully I can find some rhythm and form back.

“Being a three dimensional cricketer who can bat, bowl and field is becoming increasingly important. It is what I’ve been working on and Saturday was a sign I’m improving.”

Banstead had the leaders 122-6 at one stage, but a 115-run partnership from Sutton skipper Phil Sampson (84*) and Andy Sartor (45) saw their side recover to post a competitive 249-7.

Spriegel opened up his side’s reply - alongside Surrey colleague Scott Newman - and his innings provided the platform to salvage a losing draw, although they needed a last-wicket stand from Adam Clarke (24) and Tristan Caviet (0) to secure a point that could cost Sutton dear come September.

And the Whitgift School old boy reckons the result - coupled with last week’s triumph over Spencer - could be a turning point.

“We were going along well and, but for a couple of decisions that went against us, we could have had them more then 122 for six,” he added.

“We’ve got a few players back from school and university, so we are only going to get more competitive in the second half of the season and that was always going to be the case.”

Centuries from Graham Grace (134*) and Richard Pudney (106) saw visitors Wimbledon thrash bottom side Spencer at the weekend as they chased down 284 for the loss of just two wickets.

The hosts had Colin Ingram (79), Josh Lawrence (66) and Neil Baker (80) had helped their side set what looked like a competitive target, but they hadn’t counted on Grace and Pudney posting a 189-run partnership to secure maximum points.

Weybridge - minus skipper Abeed Janmohamed - remained in the bottom two as they capitulated to 89 all out at second-placed Reigate Priory, who knocked off the runs for the loss of just one wicket.

An unbeaten 56 from Reyno Norval saw Malden Wanderers pick up a vital win over Sunbury as skipper Giles Puckle’s men successfully negotiated the 183 required for victory for the loss of seven wickets.

Runs from numbers seven and eight - Scott Jarvis (54) and Steve Harpley (40) - helped Cobham Avorians post 171 all out at Guildford, who later eased to the win with two men down.
