New AFC Wimbledon striker Lyle Taylor has one aim for pre-season – to get fully match fit.

The striker has not had a bad start to his Dons career hitting his fourth goal in two games as AFC Wimbledon held League One Millwall to a 1-1 at the Cherry Red Records stadium on Saturday.

It could have been much better had the Dons not conceded a last-gasp equaliser to the Lions’ Sid Nelson after the Dons were reduced to nine men.

Both Callum Kennedy and Ade Azeez were removed in the latter stages after picking up injuries – Kennedy needed a stretcher, although was seen walking out of the ground unaided after the game.

The Dons jetted off to La Manga today (Monday) for a training camp that will end with a match against Spanish side Granada GT on Saturday.

Taylor, a summer signing from Scunthorpe United last week, said: “It was a good workout against Millwall.

Orders: Neal Ardley in the Dons dugout on Saturday

“Obviously they are in a league above us, but I thought defensively we were very good.

“The goal we conceded was due to having nine players on the pitch, so there’s nothing for us to feel down about and nothing for us to worry about there.”

He added: “We weren’t free flowing in the way we would like to be, but the pitch was a bit sticky and the grass was a bit long so it makes it a bit difficult, but it’s about minutes at the moment and we are more than happy about how that game went.”

Taylor spent last season on loan at Patrick Thistle in Scotland, scoring three goals in 15 appearances for the club.

With Taylor on board, manager Neal Ardley now has four strikers at his disposal for the season ahead.

The 25-year-old striker has lots of experience of League One football having played for both Scunthorpe United and Sheffield United earlier in his career.

Now he appears to be settling in well with his new team-mates – he said: “The boys are brilliant, I can’t praise them and the staff enough, they have been great for me and I’m sure they will continue to be.

“My first target it to get fit to be honest, then we’ll take the competitive games from there.

“We have goals in house and we know what we want to do and we will be doing everything we can to achieve that.”
