Ashtead CC skipper Tom Deighton remains a happy man despite a heartbreaking last ball home defeat against Spencer last weekend.

The result ended Ashtead’s unbeaten start to the season in Division One of the Surrey Championship, and saw them leapfrogged at the top of the table by Spencer and East Molesey – their opponents this weekend.

After winning the toss, Ashtead elected to bat and recovered from 30-4 to post a competitive 248-7 from their 50 overs, with Stewart Cameron hitting an impressive 72 off 81 balls.

In reply, the visitors stayed ahead of the run-rate but, in a thrilling finale, Jordy Thomas took two wickets in the penultimate over to leave Spencer 247-9 with one ball remaining.

But John Vaughan-Davies’ delivery was sent to the boundary for four to claim a dramatic Spencer win.

Deighton said: “It’s always disappointing to lose, but I was very pleased with the performance of the team.

“To post 248 after being 30-4 against a good bowling attack is testament to the way we played.

“I don’t think I’ve ever played in a game that went to the final ball, but despite the fact things didn’t go our way, it was enjoyable.”

Deighton added that he is happy with the way his team have adjusted to life in Division One, having been promoted last season.

“The difference in level was not that noticeable in the early games against a couple of the weaker teams but Saturday’s game was definitely a step up. To take it to the last ball indicates just how close we are to the top teams in the league.”

And the skipper believes that Ashtead can mount a challenge at the top of the championship this season.

“I’ve been saying all along that we’d like to go up this season. We’re good enough and have the squad to push the top two all the way.

“East Molesey will pose another tough challenge on Saturday, and I think the games against them and Spencer could define our season. We’re looking forward to it.”
