Sutton United boss Paul Doswell, below, talks to Tim Ashton about Mick Channon, selling Peter Shilton’s house and his prowess in front of goal.

First car: I was 17 and I had a Mini, and I paid £150. I’ll never forget it. The exhaust fell off within two weeks, and then a week after that the engine blew up.

It was a rust bucket, the oil went everywhere in the engine and when I lifted the bonnet it was a mess.

Pet: I had a golden retriever called Sandy when I was about seven or eight years old. There were tears when she died. Pets in our house are like family – we have dogs now.

Goal: I remember every goal, the first was a lob over the keeper when I was about eight. It was for the school team, Weston Park Primary School – I have scored a few, I played striker or winger.

Hero: Mick Channon. I am a massive Saints fan, and Channon had the windmill celebration and he used to dive to win penalties, we called it the Mick Channon dive. For my 40th birthday party, he gave me a signed picture.

When I was an estate agent I sold one of his flats in Southampton. He was more nervous meeting me.

But I was nervous when I met Peter Shilton in about 1990. I sold one of his houses in Chilworth and I never quite believed it was him until I met him and valued his house.

Wimbledon Times:

Bedroom wall pin-up: Mick Channon, above, I was not into pin-ups, I was into football.

FA Cup final: West Ham v Fulham in 1975 when Bobby Moore played for Fulham and they had Peter Mellor in goal.

But it is Man Utd v Saints in 76 that sticks in the mind, I was one of those kids who would turn the TV on at 9am and not move until the game was over. You had to watch it on BBC – I did not like the adverts on ITV.
