More than 30 Croydon Harriers tackled the South of England cross-country championships at Brighton last weekend.

Stevie Lawrence enjoyed the highest finish by a Croydon athlete during the day at Stanmer Park, finishing 19th in the junior women’s field.

It is the best performance by a Harrier in this age group for more than a decade.

GB junior international Peter Chambers returned from a recent illness to finish 24th in the five-mile junior men’s race, and team colleague Jake English also sneaked into the top 50 in 48th.

In the flagship men’s race, Sussex Uni student Ben Savill finished 154th out of more than 850 competitors in the gruelling nine-mile course. David Brown (382nd), Glenn Barden (432nd), Neil Aikman (474th), Mark Maginn (482nd) and Mohsin Harhara (511th) completed the scoring team.

The U13 girls enjoyed their best result in this competition in over-15 years thanks to Kyra Sethna-McIntosh (159th), Megan Driver (168th), Cassandra Howard (217th) and Leanne Moore (238th) in the field of 245.

The club’s other leading runners across the other age groups were Kieron Connor (85th, U17 men), Robbie Tambling (184th, U13 boys), Jules Williams (271st, senior women) and Beth Matlock (145th, U17 women).

Elsewhere, Paul Ogun celebrated his celebrated his third South of England title in the long jump at the Southern Indoor championships at Lee Valley.

The 25 year-old leapt to 7.22m to clinch gold.

Also on the field, Mityrae Brooks cleared 1.90m in the U20 men's high jump to finish seventh.

In the sprint hurdles, Robert Sakala clocked 8.63secs for the U20 men's 60m hurdles to finish third in his heat.
