Leatherhead turned on the style with an outstanding five-goal performance against Hampton & Richmond Borough at the Beveree on Tuesday night.

The 5-1 margin of victory could have been much wider, as Tanners produced a dazzling display of Ryman Premier attacking football to record their first win in nine matches in all competitions.

The visitors opened the scoring with a bizarre goal after nine minutes, when Beavers’ keeper Jack Norton was caught in two minds when a long ball was played deep into his half.

With the ball taking a high bounce, the advancing keeper should have headed it clear after leaving his area.

Instead he scuffed it with the outside of his foot and watched helplessly as the ball raced on towards the goal.

Leatherhead’s Kiernan Hughes-Mason brushed past the red-faced keeper to smash the ball home from close range.

Charlie Moone beat an offside trap to grab an equaliser for the hosts after 16 minutes, although he looked to be well beyond the last defender when the ball was played.

Nevertheless the Hampton forward fired the ball into the bottom left-hand corner, giving Leatherhead keeper Louis Wells no chance.

Beavers rallied briefly and came close to taking the lead when Moussa Diarra headed down a free-kick, but Moone fired wide from a tight angle.

Tanners restored their lead after 23 minutes - the Beavers’ defence failed to clear another probing attack and Paul Semakula side-footed home from the edge of the box.

The buoyed-up visitors added a third goal when Ka Ka Dembele tested Norton with a fierce drive, which the Hampton keeper could only punch out to the corner of his area, and Vas Karagiannis latched onto the loose ball, striking a thunderous shot in off the far post.

Dembele missed out on two chances to build on the visitors’ lead before half-time - his first shot going just wide before a second effort was deflected behind for a corner.

Leatherhead continued to attack at every given opportunity in the second half and stunned the hosts with a fourth goal after 55 minutes.

Stacy Long struck a superb free-kick from wide on the left and the flight of the ball completely deceived Norton, bouncing just in front of the keeper before curling in at the near post.

Leatherhead’s Ryan Dolby caused mayhem for the Beavers’ defence throughout the match with his penetrating runs down the left. The wing-back almost added a fifth goal for the visitors after 74 minutes, cutting inside three Hampton defenders before forcing a fine save from Norton.

Leatherhead’s Hughes-Mason and Kev Terry each found the net in the closing minutes, but on both occasions the referee’s assistant raised his flag for offside.

Hampton’s miserable night was completed in added time when Diarra stumbled in the penalty area and the tall defender’s hand clearly touched the ball as he tried to steady himself.

Carl Rook grabbed the ball to take Leatherhead’s first penalty awarded in 15 matches this season.

The Tanners striker drilled the spot-kick straight down the middle to complete a fine display of attacking football from the visitors.

Leatherhead return to League action on Saturday at Fetcham Grove when Witham Town are the visitors. Kick-off is at 3pm.
