Croydon Harriers James Dasaolu rued a golden opportunity of running sub 10 seconds at the AG Insurance Memorial Van Damme IAAF Diamond League in Brussels.

A poor start left the 27-year-old European men's 100m champion playing catch up and finishing fifth in 10.00 seconds.

USA's former Olympic and world gold medallist Justin Gatlin destroyed the field with his outstanding 9.77secs, followed by countryman Michael Rodgers (9.93secs), Jamaicans Asafa Powell (9.95secs) and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games champion Kemar Bailey-Cole (9.96secs).

Dasaolu said: “I didn't get a good start so I had to work and catch the field. Obviously I couldn't catch the field but I was still able to run a season's best.

"You can't make any mistakes at this level. I didn't react to the gun so it cost me going maybe a bit quicker than going 10-dead but overall I'm happy just to start with these guys in the Diamond League circuit."

This weekend, Dasaolu heads to Marrakech, Morocco for the IAAF Continental Cup and his final race of the season.
