Ashtead CC wrapped up the Surrey Championship Division Two title last weekend, but now they have a much bigger fish to fry – live on Sky Sports.

Skipper Tom Deighton, who took 5-10 in Saturday’s 76-run over Chipstead, will lead his team out in the finals day of the ECB National Club T20 on Tuesday, looking to write a new chapter in the club’s annals.

After winning the Surrey T20 title, Ashtead beat the champions of Sussex, Kent and Devon to take their place at Northants’ County Ground next week, looking to win the title currently held by Surrey rivals Wimbledon.

They face Peterborough in the second semi-final, with either Great Ayton or Chester Boughton Hall waiting in the final.

Deighton, who could skipper the first Division Two side to the crown, said: “We’re confident. If we can win the Surrey T20, probably one of the strongest leagues in the country, then we can go into finals day fully expect to win.

“The competition has been a big highlight for us, we have been concentrating on the league, but to have the T20 to look forward to on a Sunday has been good.

“Not everyone is keen on giving up their whole weekend, but as long as we’ve been doing well, it’s been justifying it.”

Club vice-chairman Andy Storey said: “It’s very exciting for the club and the village, there’s been a big effort to get the village involved.

“As far as the club is concerned, it’s an amazing achievement.

“When you consider we’re a Division Two side and we’ve beaten Premier Division sides, and played all our games away from home, it is all the more impressive.”

He added: “We seem to have developed a format of playing around spin bowling, and it has worked, but even with that in mind, to reach the finals day is way beyond our expectations.

“I’ve kept a beady eye on the weather, and at the moment it seems OK, so that should be fine.”

The action will be broadcast on Sky Sports 2 from 11am on Tuesday.
