Neil Warnock was in talks to take over at Crystal Palace before Tony Pulis’ appointment in November.

Pulis took over Crystal Palace when they were sitting bottom of the Premier League, and steered them to 11th, winning manager of the year along the way.

However, Warnock has revealed that he had talks with Palace co-owner Steve Parish when it looked as though Pulis may not sign.

He said: “Parish always knew I was available.

“Before he [Pulis] came there was a possibility that he wasn’t going to join, and we talked then but in the end he did sign, and they were fantastic.”

After Pulis’ departure just 48 hours before the new season, Malky Mackay and Tim Sherwood were the bookies front runners for the vacant post.

However, after controversial texts sent by the Scotsman were leaked, Palace withdrew their interest in his services.

Sherwood then withdrew his interest in the job, not wanting to be second choice.

Warnock however, had no similar concerns about who was ahead of him in the race for the manager’s role.

“Steve [Parish] had to go through the candidates, and he did,” Warnock said.

“He said he never offered it to anyone, but if I’m honest I’m not really bothered.

“I’m just glad to be here now and I’m not bothered how many were in front of me, or what the betting was,” he added.

Warnock takes charge of the first game of his second spell as manager this afternoon at Newcastle United.
