Croydon Harriers Martyn Rooney admitted the better men took the medals on the day, but he could not hide his disappointment at finishing fourth in the Commonwealth Games 400m last night (Wednesday).

Rooney's times have improved from the heats to the final in the Hampden Park stadium, winning his heat in 45.57 seconds and semi-final in 45.22secs.

However, despite clocking 45.15secs in the final, he lost out to Olympic champion Kirani James (44.24secs), Wayde van Niekerk (44.68secs) and Lalonde Gordon (44.78secs).

Rooney said: "“I’m just annoyed – the guys ran really fast and what I thought would medal would have come fourth anyway.

“The other guys ran really well and you can’t take anything away from them – it wasn’t to be."

He added: “I wanted to ignore the guys inside and outside me because I knew they would go out hard and I won’t win many races against them down the back-straight.

“It was tough to do my own thing and stay as relaxed as possible and execute as well as I could but I think the three of them were just better than me on the day.”
