Beddington boxer Charlie Edwards is heading to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with just one intention, to return with the gold medal.

Edwards was officially named last week as England’s representative in the 52kg category, and he is yet to come down from the buzz of selection.

The 21-year-old was almost certain of his place after winning the ABA England National Finals in April, but now he has his kit and can tell the world he is off to Glasgow.

He said: “I am still buzzing. I’ve known I was more than likely going, but now it is official I can tell people, and all the photo-shoots and media stuff is starting.

“The team is a really close-knit group, we all get on really well. We support each other and thrive of each other’s success, but we also have a good laugh, it is a real crack when we’re all together.

“You have to be able to enjoy the experience and not let it pass you by.

“But in training and when the bell goes, we’re all totally professional. I am going there to take the gold, that’s my target.”

Edwards believes he has the rule over his biggest rival at the Games, Andrew Selby, having sparred with the Welshman many times before.

He said: “I think Selby is about number two in the world, but I know his style. He gets past his opponents with his trickery and his awkwardness, but I know all about.

“I am looking forward to fighting in front of a big crowd, in front of the BBC cameras and around the world.

“We’re off to the Lake District on July 20, and then we enter the village on July 21 as a team.”

He added: “Someone told me the other day these Games are going to be the biggest Commonwealth Games yet, and being part of that is going to be great.
