Twickenham's McCabe is a man with a plan

Twickenham’s Clint McCabe had a plan to beat North Middlesex in the Middlesex County League Premier Division on Saturday, and it worked.

He also had a plan to bring Richmond’s new bowling sensation Scott Power to the Green, but that did not work.

Instead, Power took 7-10 in a stunning 11-over spell as Richmond beat table-topping Teddington by a single wicket at Old Deer Park.

As for McCabe, unpacking from a house move left him running late and he slotted into the Twickenham batting order at seven.

But he repeated his Brondesbury heroics of earlier in the season to  hit the decisive runs (38*) that set North Middlesex 126 to win, a target they missed by 21 runs.

He said: “It was a horrible wicket to play on because it was so damp making the bounce irregular and the pace slow.

“We got to lunch on about 85 and I was batting with our nine, who is a capable bat, and I said to the skipper that my plan was to keep on batting, and when 10 came in, I’d go for it.

“We agreed that if we got to 120 plus, it would be a difficult target for them. And so it proved.”

Twickenham had North Middlesex on 33-3 thanks to three Rashid Mullahzahah wickets, before Parminda Singh skittled the visitors in 14 overs, taking 7-32.

McCabe said: “Parminda is an exceptional talent. He can get double the turn on the ball than I can – he was just unplayable.

“I know Scott [Power] was excellent for Richmond, we know each other and I tried to get him to come to Twickenham, but he decided against it.

“If he had come to us then I am sure I would be bowling a lot less, so maybe it’s not so bad.”

Power’s heroics restricted Teddington to 157 off 59.3 overs, before Richmond’s Andrew Lowe (45) and Joe Smith (43) set up Power to smash the winning runs.
