Twickenham and Teddington cricket clubs resume their Middlesex County League rivalry this weekend, but the Twickenham skipper Carlos Nunes only has eyes for the top prize.

After contrasting fortunes on the opening day of the Premier Division season last weekend, Twickenham top the table having won the only game to survive the weather with a one-wicket triumph over Brondesbury.

This season marks Twickenham’s second in the Premier Division after promotion in 2012, and rather than simply survive last term, Nunes and his men took the bragging rights of neighbours Teddington and Richmond, finishing above their rivals.

And now Nunes is looking to take a step further up the table, and he believes he has the team to do it.

“We have had roughly the same team for six years now, and with some excellent additions we’re building something strong,” he said.

“We didn’t bat well against Brondesbury, and we’ll look at that ahead of Teddington on Saturday.”

He added: “The rivalry between the neighbouring teams is great for the game here, and I know I will get it in the ear come the weekend.

“But it is more important to Twickenham to win the league than to beat our neighbours, but even so, I am looking forward to the game and getting the rivalry going again.”

Last weekend’s opening win at the Green was a close- run thing even though Twickenham skittled Brondesbury for just 86 – Parminder Singh (3-11) and Arunjit Sandhu (3-22) starring with the ball.

But in reply Nunes’ side struggled with the bat and only Clint McCabe (51*) provided any resistance as the top order collapsed for just 20 runs.

The scores were tied with Ts 86-9 when the rain came, but the clouds cleared just long enough for McCabe to smash the one run needed..

Nunes, pictured left, said: “I didn’t think we bowled that well, but the pitch was a tough one where the ball wobbled everywhere. Playing under dark clouds did not help. We went out to bat with a positive attitude, but at 21-5 we had to take a step back.

“On that pitch, Clint did well to get us over the line.”
