Footballer Luke Shaw put himself in contention for a spot in England’s World Cup squad in his country’s friendly win over Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday, but will keep his feet firmly on the ground.

The 18-year-old admitted to feeling a little emotional after learning of his call-up to the senior squad last week, but he showed no sign of nerves as he made his international debut as a second-half substitute for Ashley Cole in the 1-0 triumph.

The former Rydens Enterprise School student, who only made his first
top-flight appearance for Southampton 16 months ago, scored 17 goals in nine games to help his school reach the English Schools FA Cup Cup semi-
finals in 2010.

He is vying for a spot in boss Roy Hodgson’s 23-man squad for Brazil with  Cole and Everton’s Leighton Baines.

“I have no eyes on the World Cup,” said the former Molesey Juniors youngster at the weekend.

“I think this week is just going to be a good experience and we’ll see what happens at the end of the season.”

But team-mate Adam Lallana, England’s star man against the Danes, believes Shaw, left, has done his chances no harm this week.

“He looks like a seasoned pro and it was no surprise to see him included in the squad,” he said.

“There are two outstanding players ahead of him, but he’ll keep his feet on the ground.

“He knows he is going to learn off them and if he watches them closely in training it is going to do him good.”
