AFC Wimbledon suffered injury-time heartbreak to extend their worst run of the season at home, going down 1-0 to relegation strugglers Bury.

Danny Mayor’s 94th minute effort condemned Dons to four defeats in a row having failed to find the net in the last three, although Neal Ardley’s men dominated at the Cherry Red Records stadium.

The Dons drop to 16th in the League Two, still nine points above the drop zone but having played at least one game more than six of the eight sides below them, and two more than their opponents.

The game started evenly with both teams lining in a 3-5-2 formation and cancelling each other out in the middle of the park.

Wimbledon though had an early chance as Danny Hylton, playing against the side he played for in the first half of the season, headed straight to Brian Jensen after George Francomb’s delivery from the right.

Ardley made two changes from the side that went down to Portsmouth with new loan signing Michael Collins, who signed on Thursday from promotion-chasing Scunthorpe United until the end of the season, and Barry Fuller coming in for Will Antwi and Luke Moore.

The visitor’s best opportunity of the half came as Daniel Nardiello broke into the penalty area, twisting past Darren Jones, and struck across goal, only for Fuller to divert it for a corner.

The introduction of Harry Pell at half time gave Wimbledon more urgency and, playing through the centre with Sammy Moore and debutant Collins, Pell helped the Dons take control of the match.

Gradually it became a contest between Hylton and former Burnley keeper Jensen, with the Dane coming out on top.

The best effort came just short of the hour-mark, Hylton twisted on the edge of the box to find space to shoot before lashing the ball towards the bottom corner, only for the 38-year-old to tip it round the post.

With Bury having weathered the storm they found their own momentum in the final ten minutes, forcing Ross Worner into action for the first time.

Substitute Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro fired over and then onto the cross bar before Danny Mayor skipped onto a loose ball and finished four minutes into stoppage time to steal the spoils.

Wimbledon’s next action is Tuesday night’s re-arranged tie with Newport County before heading to Fleetwood Town on Saturday.
