Head coach Alex Codling was left satisfied by Rosslyn Park’s response to defeat as they moved within three points of top spot after victory over Old Albanians.

After the disappointment of a last-minute defeat at Blaydon the previous weekend, Park beat Old Albanians 37-13 on Saturday.

Codling got the response he was expecting and the win was coupled with SSE National League One leaders Doncaster losing at Fylde – though he insists he is paying no attention to their results.

“It was an excellent performance,” he said. “It was a really positive way to bounce back from the week before.

“We started slowly but the rest of the game was set up when we scored an outstanding try after about 10 minutes. It was fantastic.

“The boys all knew we hadn’t played anywhere near our potential the week before. I am not really focussed on Doncaster – I am just focussed on how we work every week.

“That has been my sole focus every week and nothing has changed in that respect. I am just trying to make us a better team. That is for other people to worry about.”

David Vincent and Sam Shires each touched down in the first half for Rosslyn Park before a succession of minor injuries forced Codling’s hand.

However, they responded well as Richard Boyle added a third try and Vincent secured the bonus point – and Charles Broughton rubbed salt into Old Albanians’ wounds late on.

Next up for Rosslyn Park is a trip to Wharfedale – an in-form side coming off the back of a win at promotion-chasing Esher – and Codling is hoping to see a repeat of Saturday’s display.

“They have beaten all the top teams at home this year,” he said. “It will be a huge challenge but we also understand from the week before what we need to do to get a win on the road.

“They are probably one of the form teams this year – they have done really well. They play and they have got a very strong pack and they move the ball around.

“A lot will depend on the weather conditions – our set piece and defence are going to be key. If we get those right, then the rest will follow and we will have reason to be confident.”
