New Malden's Blaize jumps to it

Kingston AC & Polytechnic Harrier Dominique Blaize may have had a sleepless night, but she did not let it show at the British Athletics Glasgow International Match last weekend Saturday.
 

The 25-year-old heptathlon specialist from New Malden posted a season’s best 6.22m leap to finish third behind  winner current European indoor champion from Russia Darya Klishina (6.44m) and USA’s Funmi Jimoh (6.34m) in a high-quality long jump competition.
 

The former Holy Cross School student only discovered the strength of the field the night before the meeting at the new state-of-the-art Emirates Arena.
 

And she admitted it didn’t make for comfortable bedtime reading.
 

“I was looking at the field in my bedroom last night and said ‘Oh my god, this is quite daunting’,” she said at the weekend.
 

“I didn’t do as bad as I thought I would do.
 

“I would have liked to have done a bit better but at the same time it was all about getting better and getting more experience.”
 

And Blaize, who works as a coaching manager for Tolworth-based Sports For Schools, added: “I’m looking forward to going back to the drawing board and doing lots of work.
 

“Then we’ll go to the UK trials and see what happens there.”
