GB's Twigg to lead Surbiton indoors
9:13am Friday 4th January 2013 in Sport By Sean Cotter & Colin Pike
Team GB star Georgie Twigg will skipper Surbiton Ladies for the first time this weekend as the Maxifuel Super Sixes Division One indoor tournament kicks off.
The 22-year-old London 2012 bronze medallist, who joined the club in summer, will temporarily take the reigns with captain Sarah Haycroft unavailable for the opening weekend of the competition at Nottingham Trent University.
Haycroft’s team are bidding to add promotion to the indoor Premier League this winter to match last summer’s memorable promotion to the outdoor top flight.
Surbiton start their campaign on Saturday morning against Harleston Magpies – relegated from the Premier Division last season – before taking on East Grinstead later the same day.
Surbiton play Brooklands Poynton 24 hours later before facing Horsham – who beat Surbiton twice last season on the way to joining them in Division One.
They play Bristol Firebrands, Trojans, Sevenoaks and Wakefield Bradford a week later.
Meanwhile, Surbiton’s men travel to the Football Association’s newly-opened sports centre at St George’s Park in Burton-upon-Trent to face Loughborough Students, Canterbury, East Grinstead and Bowdon in the latest rounds of their Maxifuel Super Sixes Championship Premier Division season.
Skipper Tim Deakin’s men are currently seventh in the nine-team table for the series having won one and lost three of their matches so far, but could still qualify for finals day at Wembley Arena on January 27.
However, they are only three points above the relegation places, so survival will be the first priority.
