Despite being taken to extra time, Brentford ultimately displayed enough quality to see off Bradford City and win this FA Cup second round replay 4-2 on Tuesday night at Griffin Park.
Victory in this controversial replay – ordered after an appeal panel overturned Bradford’s disqualification for fielding an ineligible player in the original tie – will see the Bees take a trip to the seaside to take on Southend United in the third round.
Star duo Harry Forrester and Clayton Donaldson proved their worth, coming off the bench to help steer their side through.
Brentford gifted the visitors the lead after half an hour in when a slip by Leon Legge just inside his own half allowed Zavon Hines to break down the left and while his shot was blocked, Kyel Reid struck the follow up past debutant Antoine Gounet.
The Bees got back on level terms just before the break after Marcello Trotta was fouled inside the box and the striker despatched his penalty into the bottom right hand corner.
The second half was a largely forgettable affair, with both sides having just a couple of chances.
Bradford re-took the lead early in the first period of extra time when former-Bee Alan Connell scored from the penalty spot.
Yet the Bees were gradually gaining the upper hand, with both Forrester and Donaldson causing problems and after the former’s shot was blocked, Trotta blasted a shot past Jon McLaughlin.
Forrester was the architect again when he set up Donaldson and the striker squeezed the ball in at the near post from a wide angle.
The Bees wrapped things up a minute into the second period of extra time when Forrester’s low shot beat the Bantams’ keeper.
