Carshalton Athletic manager Tommy Williams believes he is still the man to turn the club’s fortunes around.

The Robins sit bottom of the Ryman League Premier Division and three points adrift of their nearest rivals, having also played more games than any other club in the bottom half.

Moreover, while Tuesday night’s 3-1 defeat at leaders Margate is not unexpected, Williams would have wanted more than back-to-back defeats against fellow bottom-three dwellers Hendon and Leiston.

“The facts don’t lie, and recent results haven’t been what anyone connected with the club would like,” Williams said.

“But I’m confident we won’t be in this position at the end of the season.

“Hendon was billed as a ‘must-win’ game. I don’t like that phrase because, although the defeat was hard to take, there are still plenty of points to play for moving forward.

“We weren’t outplayed by Hendon, a fact even confirmed by their manager to me afterwards, and that is where my confidence stems from.”

Williams has been pleased with the effort his small squad has shown during his eight-week tenure but feels the players need to start showing a bit more quality in front of goal.

Ola Sogbanmu is currently his top goalscorer with six across all competitions.

Williams said: “We’ve dominated large chunks of games recently but failed to turn that into goals and it costs us. I am looking to reinforce our front line and hope to add a new face or two soon.”

One player that has joined the Robins is winger Joshua Clarke, whose arrival on-loan from Brentford was capped with a debut goal against Hendon.

“Clarke’s fitness and sharpness, coming from a football league infrastructure, showed and I’d like that throughout the team, but I’ve had to build an almost completely brand new squad months into the season. It is like starting pre-season in the middle of autumn, which isn’t ideal.

“The fans have been great and I want everyone to know that I believe our time will come. I’m so confident that we’ll put together a run of good results soon and I still have the full backing of the board and owner.”

Carshalton next host Canvey Island at Colston Avenue on Saturday 15th December.
