Whyteleafe manager Steve Griffin wanted a reaction from his team in the second leg of their Kent League Cup tie with Sevenoaks Town – and he got it.

Having lost at Sevenoaks 3-1 in the first leg, goals from Cedric Abrahams, Jerson Dos Santos, Michael Abnett and Che Stadhart saw Leafe through 5-3 on aggregate – 4-0 on the day.

Griffin said: “The scoreline flattered Sevenoaks. We were very disappointed with the first leg, but we addressed that in the week and before the game, and we got the reaction we were looking for.”

Aside from the first leg disappointment, Leafe are putting a run together in the Kent League Premier Division with three wins and four goals in each of the past three games.

Griffin believes he is beginning to see the fruits of having a settled side.

He said: "We were all set in the summer with a good squad but the likes of Farnborough, Bognor and Sutton raided us and took our better players.

"That meant we had to have a second pre-season at the beginning of the league programme and that is not helpful.

"I also think it took some time for the players to realise the level they are at now, and to adapt to it. We had to remind them of the fact that this is where we are now."

Leafe started the Kent League Premier Division slowly, waiting until the fourth game to secure their first win of the season - a run which included a disappointing FA Cup defeat at Redhill.

"We've brought some experience in with Paul [Scott], Michael [Abnett] and Che [Stadhart] and they have helped the other lads tremendously.

"We now need to start winning games and move ourselves up the table, this a tough league and we've not given ourselves the best of starts."

Leafe next face a trip to Greenwich Borough this weekend.
