Seven AFC Wimbledon football supporters are gearing up to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK by cycling from London to Amsterdam.

The Dons fans are taking part in the charity’s annual ‘Football to Amsterdam’ ride on 9 and 10 June. The ride will see more than 400 cyclists, (all supporters of different clubs from around the country) cycle to Amsterdam from starts in London and Yorkshire, raising a total of more than £300,000 for the charity.

The seven Wimbledon fans – Anita Gibbons, Bruce McFadyen, Herbie Knott, Kevin Deegan, Paul Parma, Rob Crane and Sean McLaughlin – have between them raised more than £5,000 to date.

“Taking part in this ride has become something of a tradition for fans of AFC Wimbledon,” said participant Rob Crane, 42, from South Wimbledon.

“It’s going to be a tough two-day ride, leaving the velodrome at the Olympic site in Stratford and heading to Harwich to catch an overnight ferry. Then we’ll spend the second day cycling from the Hook of Holland to Amsterdam, finishing at Ajax’s stadium.“Then we might have a couple of beers to celebrate getting there in one piece!
“The facts about prostate cancer are sobering. It’s the most common type of cancer in men as one in eight of us will get it during our lifetime, and amongst black men this rises to one in four.
“Over 47,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year – that’s 130 men every day – and a man dies from the disease every hour.
“This ride is one way that football fans from around the country can come together to help Prostate Cancer UK raise funds to fight the disease and support people affected by it.”
