The Rowans School in Wimbledon became truly ‘International’ during the last week of half term, when each class celebrated a different child’s nationality.

The week began with all children passing through ‘airport security’ before collecting their tickets and ‘flying’ off with Rowans Airways for their destination country.

The Languages Fair on Wednesday saw many parents and visitors sharing their home language, culture and food as they visited each classroom. A highlight of the week was when a local business also supported the event, with a sushi making class and tasting session in ‘Japan’.

Links were made with schools overseas and the children enjoyed skype calls to schools in Turkey, Italy and India as well as exchanging letters and emails with schools in Holland and France.

Stephen Hammond MP joined the School Council for an assembly to answer questions from the children about what will happen after we leave the EU and to learn more about his job and his views on foreign affairs.

The week finished with the children making their class’s nationality’s flags and dressing in the costumes and/or colours. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are already looking forward to and planning which countries can be represented next year.

The week provides a wealth of learning opportunities for children with international songs, dance and music, whilst of course, also providing an awareness of the wider world and their place within it.
