Letter to the Editor: Delay on food waste collections cost us £100k

By Councillor David Simpson, Merton Council (Conservative, Hillside Ward)

I'm pleased that Merton council has finally got round to expanding the opportunities for recycling in the borough .

It was, of course, the previous Conservative administration that introduced the successful food waste collection service that would have been rolled out to all residents in Merton by the end of 2010 under our proposals.

Labour should therefore be ashamed of their decision not to complete the scheduled roll out.

Not only have some Merton residents had to wait a further two years to participate in the scheme, but Labour have also cost council tax payers at least £100,000 more in additional landfill charges than would have been the case had they stuck to our timetable.
