Police have named the man stabbed to death in Thomson Crescent on Saturday as 23-year-old Steven Jones.

Officers had been waiting for formal identification and to inform the victim's next of kin before releasing his name.

Mr Jones, who lived in Thomson Crescent, died after being stabbed.

He was discovered by police who were called to the street at about 8.10pm after receiving reports of a disturbance there.

He was rushed to Mayday Hospital but pronounced dead just before 11pm.

A postmortem examination held yesterday gave the cause of Mr Jones' death as a stab wound to his liver.

An inquest at Croydon Coroner's Court is due to be opened and adjourned tomorrow.

Detective Inspector Russell Taylor, who is leading the murder investigation, appealed for witnesses.

He said: "I would urge anyone who was in Thomson Crescent, or the surrounding area at the time of the incident to come forward. It may be that you witnessed the disturbance itself, or have subsequently been told what happened - the information you hold may prove vital in assisting the investigation, and bringing the person(s) responsible for the death of this young man to justice."

Three men were arrested in connection with the investigation yesterday morning.

Anyone with information should call the incident room on 020 8721 4165 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
