As the NHS marks its 65th anniversary MP Tom Brake has spoken of the value of St Helier Hospital.

The Carshalton and Wallington MP marked the anniversary of the National Health Service Act which came into effect on July 5, 1948.

He said: “The NHS is one of Britain’s greatest achievements and one of our country’s most valued and valuable institutions.

“I would like to say thank you to the thousands of staff who have nurtured the health of the nation over the last 65 years. Long may it continue.

“We are fortunate in Carshalton and Wallington in having the St Helier Hospital, but with a&e and maternity services currently under threat, we certainly don’t take our NHS for granted."

The Better Services Better Value (BSBV) healthcare review is proposing to close St Helier hospital’s maternity, children’s services and accident and emergency wards.

St Helier Hospital

The BSBV review argue their proposals would mean that everyone in south west London, Epsom and the surrounding area will receive the highest quality of care when they need it.

However campaigners, including Tom Brake, criticise BSBV arguing it is a flawed process based on contested assumptions and poor data.

Mr Brake’s constituents have been getting in touch with him wishing the NHS a happy birthday.

The messages will be placed on a giant birthday card which will be presented to St Helier Hospital staff.
