A new report shows that Epsom and St Helier hospitals are providing some of the highest quality care in the region.

The report allows patients to see how hospitals measure up against one another and was compiled by the independent health consultancy - MHP Health Mandate.

Mary Burstow, chairwoman of the health and well being scrutiny committee, said:  “I am so proud of all the staff at Epsom and St Helier hospitals for once again demonstrating what an excellent job they do.

"They really are the best in south-west.

“These figures go to demonstrate how daft BSBV are for wanting to close Epsom and St Helier’s A&E and maternity service.”

The hospitals are measured against 10 standards including formal complaints and whether patients felt they experienced good care.

The trust’s overall score of 91 out of 146 hospitals was the highest ranking in south-west London and north Surrey.

Matthew Hopkins, the trust’s chief executive, said: “These findings contain some fantastic results for our hospitals but we recognise that at 91st in the country there are many aspects of our service we need to improve.

“But what the report does do is highlight our performance in both national and local terms.

"We recognise that there is work to do on a national scale but we are very pleased that we are also recognised as providing the best patient care of any Trust in south west London and north Surrey.

“And of course, we are delighted that local people can now compare the strengths and weaknesses of their local hospital more easily than before.”

When compared against other trusts in south west London and Surrey only Royal Surrey and Frimley hospitals did better.

Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, said: “This is brilliant news and a feather in the cap for the trust's staff who work so hard on behalf of patients.

“It also demonstrates once again the madness of BSBV's plans to close our A&E and maternity.

"What is the logic in downgrading one of the best hospitals in the region?”
