With council elections fast approaching, some fresh candidates have thrown their hats into the ring.

Giuseppe Fraschini, 26, will be standing for Merton Conservatives in Colliers Wood.

The Swiss-born actor performed in the opening sequence of the London Olympic ceremony and organises the Giggle Box comedy club at the Colour House Theatre in Merton Abbey Mills.

He has high hopes to rise through the ranks of local government and enter national politics in the future.

If elected, he would push for a reduction in council tax, a more vibrant high street and less litter.

On the other side of the borough, Kevin Whincup, chairman of the Carters Estate residents' association, will stand for the Liberal Democrats in Raynes Park.

Wimbledon Times:

Kevin Whincup

Mr Whincup, 35, was inspired to train as a nurse after seeing the high level of care given to his five-year-old autistic son.

Having put his studies temporarily on hold, he devotes his time to improving the surrounding environment for the 490 homeowners and tenants on the estate.

A trained security guard from Middlesborough, Mr Whincup moved to London in 2002 after meeting his future wife online and has been chairman of the residents association since April 2013.

If elected, Mr Whincup would push for more 20mph speed limits on roads, installing a lift for disabled access to Raynes Park station and more free parking to support independent businesses.
