Would-be councillors are being invited to find out more about standing in next year's local elections.

Merton Council has organised next month's event for prospective candidates to find out more about what elected representatives do, what the election process entails, and to speak to council staff what support is available.

The event is on Saturday, March 23, from 10am to 1pm, at the main chamber at Merton Civic Centre in London Road, Morden.

Merton is run by Labour after the party won the most seats at the 2010 election and seized power from the Conservatives, who had ran the council from 2006.

But Labour is a minority administration after they only won 28 out of 60 seats, while the Conservatives hold 27 seats, the Merton Park ward Independents hold three, and the Liberal Democrats hold two in West Barnes ward.

The next election will be held in June 2014 to coincide with the European elections.

To book a place at next month's event email members.developmentenquiries@merton.gov.uk or call 020 8545 3383.
