Police are inviting residents to ask them questions about Mitcham town centre and wider issues about crime and safety.

A two-hour public meeting will be hosted by Figge’s Marsh safer neighbourhood team(SNT), at St Marks Family Centre, St Mark’s Road, at 1.30pm on Saturday, October 13.

Mitcham and Morden MP Siobhain McDonagh and ward councillors are also available for questions.

1.30pm – open for refreshments
2.00pm – Mike Smith, chairman of the SNT ward panel, will open the meeting
2.05pm – Ross Mitchell, from Merton Council, will provide an update on Mitcham town centre improvements
2.15pm – Questions to Mr Mitchell
2.25pm – Sergeant Dan Wheatley, the SNT team leader, will provide an update on local police activity and the new controlled drinking zone in Mitcham
2.40pm – Questions to Police
2.55pm – Public Soapbox – general questions to councillors (Geraldine Stanford, Peter Walker and Agatha Akingiye), council officers, police, and Siobhain McDonagh MP
3.30pm – meeting ends, opportunity to talk informally to speakers

During a similar public forum in March, many residents called for a controlled drinking zone (CDZ) to be introduced in Mitcham town centre, where they were told the council thought it would be too costly.

Then, after a consultation with residents over the summer returned overwhelming approval for the CDZ, it was approved and brought into force last month.
