A campaign to reduce the national speed limit from 30mph to 20mph arrived in Merton last week.

Supporters gathered in Raynes Park on Saturday, October 6, to launch the ‘20 is plenty’ Merton campaign which has the support of MP and Transport Minister Norman Baker.

Shas Sheehan, chairwoman of the '20 is plenty' Merton group, said: "We would like Merton council to formally accept a policy of ‘Total 20’ to introduce a default limit of 20mph across residential roads, wherever possible.

"Places as diverse as Portsmouth, Lancashire and Islington have shown that we can do it without physical calming which reduces costs enormously."

A public meeting on the issue will be held on Wednesday, October 17, which Mr Baker is expected to attend, at Raynes Park Library from 7.30pm to 9pm.
