Merton’s green spaces have been named among the best in London after winning silver at London in Bloom 2012.

The Paddock Allotment in Cannon Hill scooped first prize and a gold award for best allotment in London for the third consecutive year, while the borough was also awarded a Silver Gilt for Mitcham Common and South Park Gardens.

The top prize for schools taking part in a gardening campaign to encourage young people to help improve their school grounds was won by the Sacred Heart Primary School in New Malden.

Councillor Andrew Judge, cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration said: "A lot of hard work has gone into improving our green spaces and public places.

"I would like to thank residents and local organisations for the effort they've made in making Merton one of the best green boroughs in the capital."
