Olympic spirit lives on for pupils at Gorringe Park Primary School
3:30pm Saturday 6th October 2012 in News By Lauren May, Chief Reporter
The Oympic spirit continued to live on this week as primary pupils were paid a visit by an official Olympic torchbearer.
Dean Parsons, otherwise known as AFC Wimbledon’s mascot Haydon the Womble, visited Gorringe Park Primary School on Friday to tell pupils about his experience of being a torchbearer and them the chance to hold his coveted Olympic torch.
Mr Parsons said: "I thoroughly enjoyed being a torchbearer and games-maker.
"It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and an experience I’d like to share with the community.
"I’m delighted to be able to take the Olympic torch to our local schools - they appreciate it more than anyone."
Councillor Martin Whelton, cabinet member for education, said: "Many of our younger generation watched the torch come through Merton in July, and hopefully the Olympics will inspire our children to get more involved in sports and community activities."
