Brave fundraisers will walk barefoot over red hot embers in support of St Raphael’s Hospice, and you can join them.

To commemorate its 25th anniversary the hospice is looking for people to take part in its Firewalk at the hospice grounds in North Cheam on Tuesday, October 9.

Participants will face the ultimate test of mind over matter as they walk barefoot over red hot embers burning at around 1200 F.

Director of fundraising at St Raphael’s Hospice, Keith Witham, said: "I’ve done the Firewalk before - it’s great fun. There will be motivational training before the fire walk itself.

"Walking across the coals is a fantastic achievement - it’s an amazing way to impress your friends, yourself, and have some fun and raise much-needed funds for the Hospice.

"Registration is £25 and we ask you to raise at least £150 in sponsorship for St Raphael’s. This won’t be difficult as people will be more than willing to sponsor you to walk on fire."

A large team of reporters, editors and advertising staff from the South London Guardian series are also going to attempt the challenge to raise money for our Give Your Quid campaign for the hospice.

Sean Duggan, group editor, said: "I am delighted that so many staff are going to join me doing the fire walk next month. I have to admit that I feel some trepidation at the thought of placing my bare feet onto red hot coals.

"But I am sure that it is safe and am looking forward to completing the challenge and raising as much money as I can for St Raphael’s Hospice. I hope as many people as possible sign-up to take part on the night."

The event is being run by an events company called Blaze.

Participants must register at 6.30pm and they will be given motivational training.

Light refreshments will be available on the night and spectators are welcome to cheer their friends across the coals.
