Wimbledon’s very own Olympic champion is set to become the face of a new borough-wide school sports competition.

The Sophie Hosking Challenge Cup will involve all primary schools in the borough after the proposal was agreed at a Merton Council meeting on September 12.

The competition will be an annual sporting event for all eight to 11-year-olds in a bid to promote public health and tackle childhood obesity.

Councillor Samantha George, the Conservative leisure and culture spokesperson who proposed the motion, said: "It was great to gain cross-party support for our proposal of the Sophie Hosking Challenge Cup and that Merton Council agreed to name it after Sophie, in honour of her wonderful achievements at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

"I hope that the introduction of this new sports trophy will inspire and encourage all of Merton's school kids in their pursuit of sporting success, perhaps enabling future generations of Olympians to emerge in the borough.

"It's brilliant that we can also celebrate Sophie's achievements as our very own local Olympic Champion."

The 26-year-old former Kingston Grammar School student and AFC Wimbledon fan won gold in the women’s lightweight double sculls with partner, Kat Copeland.

On hearing that the proposal had gained cross party support, Hosking tweeted that it was "fantastic news" and said she would try to come down when the inaugural competition takes place.
