Police are appealing after a century-old violin, worth £2,500, was stolen from a musician travelling home on the Tube.

The violin’s owner, a 42-year-old musician from Motspur Park, was returning home from on Friday, July 20, after performing at a London theatre when he noticed the violin was missing after getting off the Jubilee Line, at Waterloo station, just after midnight.

Unsure if he accidentally left the violin on the train, he waited three weeks in the hope it would be handed back to London Underground, but it became clear it had been stolen.

The 1880s violin was given to the musician when he was just 12 years old and he described it as a "good friend" and of great sentimental value.

It is full-sized, with the label 'Percy Lee 1936', and is golden in colour with a wide-striped two-piece backplane with a rippled dent near to the bottom.

There was a bow in the case, an octagonal stick with silver winding and leather at the handle.
