Caravans pitch up at Cannon Hill Common Caravans pitch up at Cannon Hill Common

A convoy of caravans have set up camp at Cannon Hill Common.

The group, including caravans and vans, arrived yesterday parking up at the local nature reserve.

There have already been claims by residents of fly tipping.

Samantha Roberts, tweeted Merton Council to say that rubbish had already been dumped since the group arrived.

Both the police and Merton Council are aware and have said they are working to resolve the issue. 

A spokesperson for Merton Council said: “We were made aware of the vehicles on Cannon Hill Common and have a joint protocol with the police on how to respond to unauthorised encampments which we are working through now.”

There is an urgent need for a barrier of huge tree trunks all along Cannon Hill Lane to prevent access to the land by Travellers and alike. The Council should take this action now so there is not a repeat of this dreadful situation.

Merton council could have prevented this is they had taken proper action after last years Korean church incident when over 50 cars were allowed to park on the Common just above the lake. After that Merton council put locked gate across the access road but east europeans and these travellers just drive around it to get on the common. Its a sad state of affairs that this will end up with the enclosure of the common so everyone will be able to enjoy it without cars driving around and rubbish being dumped. Technically Cannon Hill Common is just a park, it is not Common Land. It was given to the people of Merton, not the council by the owner of the land and local housebuilder Mr Blay)

perhaps if the councils didnt keep evicting the travellers from legal sites they wouldnt be forced to use common land. every time they shut a site the travellers have no where to go so they are going to find somewhere.

They do have somewhere to go, they are usually not English, they can go back to the country they originated from.

Kazza it is NOT common land. Cannon Hill Common is just an unenclosed recreation ground. The travellers are trespassing which is illegal. Merton council and the police should move them on. Of course they have more human rights than anyone else and the law everyone else has to abide by does not apply to them. They are still there after over a week and making an awful mess. SORT IT OUT MERTON COUNCIL
