A post box outside department store Elys in Wimbledon has already been painted gold in honour of Wimbledon born rower Sophie Hosking.
Royal Mail have said the gold boxes will be repainted in the traditional red, which has been the standard colour of UK post boxes since 1874, in "due course".
Commemorative stamps have also been issued to celebrate each Team GB gold medal win.
