Merton is getting ready for the official Olympic torch, which will pass through Merton four days before the start of the Olympic Games.

The flame is expected to reach Merton on July 23 at 3.30pm following a route starting in Bishopsford Road in Morden and winding its way to finish at Church Road in Wimbledon with residents invited to line the streets.

Four party spaces will also be set up along the route at Mitcham Fair Green, Merton Abbey Mills, South Park Gardens, and Ricards Lodge School where people will be able to bring a picnic after the relay.

While no one person running through the borough on July 23 is from Merton, deserving residents are being invited to take part in an alternative relay with a real Olympic torch at an Olympics celebration organised by MP for Mitcham and Morden, Siobhain McDonagh.

The event, which will feature music, sport, games and a barbecue, will be held at The Hub, home of Tooting and Mitcham football club, on Saturday, July 28.

Former Olympic champion Ray Stevens and Wimbledon AFC mascot Haydon the Womble, both running with the Olympic torch outside of Merton, have already committed to taking part.

If you would like to nominate someone to take part or would like to put yourself forward please email lmay@london.newsquest.co.uk or call 020 8722 6336.
