Council to honour armed forces with new war memorial
7:20am Saturday 23rd June 2012 in News By Lauren May, Chief Reporter
A new war memorial will be dedicated by Merton Council next week to honour past and present servicemen.
The service for the new memorial will take place outside the civic centre in Morden at 9.45am on June 30 – Armed Forces Day.
A parade will then pass along London Road in Morden to St Lawrence’s Church in St Helier where a multi-faith service will be held at 11am.
Members of the Royal British Legion, Army Cadets from Wimbledon College, Air Training Corps, the Scouts, Police Cadets, Territorial Army, the City of London Fusiliers, and other organisations will be taking part.
Councillor Maxi Martin, cabinet member for children’s services who is organising the event, said: "This year’s theme is "Honouring the Living" where we can help celebrate and recognise those brave people who do so much to keep us safe at home and abroad."
