The family of the young cricketer who died on the tube line in Wimbledon Park yesterday has thanked the public for their messages of support.

Surrey batsman Tom Maynard was found dead on the tracks near Arthur Road at 5.03am yesterday, prompting the cricket world to pledge their messages of grief.

In a statement the 23-year-old's family said: "The Maynard family would like to thank everyone for the many messages of support following Tom’s tragic death in London yesterday morning.

"As you can appreciate, the news has come as a devastating blow and although the family is grateful for all the kind messages of sympathy, we would ask that we can be left to grieve in private at this very difficult and sad time for us."

Mr Maynard, who was born in Cardiff, was the son of former England batsman Matthew Maynard, who played for and later coached Glamorgan.

Yesterday, Mr Maynard’s girlfriend, 25-year-old glamour model Carly Baker, from Wimbledon, said on Twitter: "My beautiful boyfriend Tom Maynard, I can't cope with this.

"I love you always and forever. You mean't everything to me.

"You're the most special man I have ever met. You made me the happiest girl. I love you always X.

"We will always be together. I love you Tom X."

Glamorgan, where Tom Maynard spent four years, and his current club Surrey, have postponed their respective matches scheduled for Wednesday.

Surrey's flag is flying at half-mast at its Oval ground where England will play the West Indies later in a one-day match.

Both sides will wear black arm bands as a mark of respect for the match and there will be a minute's silence, while flowers and shirts have been left outside the ground.
