An incident involving a "suspected suicidal person" caused trains travelling through Wimbledon to come to a halt this afternoon.

A woman in her 20s has been apprehended by police and remains in custody after what is believed to be an attempt to take her own life.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said their officers were called to Wimbledon station at 3.15pm after a member of staff raised the alarm.

He said: "The woman has been apprehended by officers and has been brought back down the street level. She has no injuries."

All train services through Wimbledon had been stopped for just over an hour until the incident was resolved at 4.20pm.

Train services are back up and running, but with delays of up to 50 minutes.

During the incident, a spokesman for rail operator South West Trains said: "A suspected suicidal person is on site at Wimbledon.

"Emergency services are on site at Wimbledon. We cannot move trains currently."
