Food growers will open the doors to their secret gardens later this month.

Allotments and community gardens welcome the public on March 16 and 17 as part of the big dig – an Olympic-inspired event forming part of London-wide community good growing project capital growth.

Merton sites taking part include Tamworth Farm Allotment Society’s garden in London Road, Mitcham, and the May Project in Middleton Road, Morden.

Also opening their doors are Sustainable Merton’s garden in Phipp’s Bridge Road, Mitcham, and the Fireplace Community Garden in Kingston Road, Wimbledon.

Olympics chief Seb Coe said: “This spring we will be encouraging communities to come together and garden for the Games.

“This could be growing a champion’s feast with London 2012 inspired colours, sprucing up a whole area in your community or even co-ordinating the window boxes on your street.”

Grants worth £300 were made available for groups wanting to start a food growing project.
