Penalties for fare-dodging passengers have jumped by more than 50 per cent.
Transport for London (TfL) raised the fine for fare evasion on its trains, buses and trams from £50 to £80 on Sunday (February 19). The charge is halved if paid within 21 days.
A TfL spokesman said fare dodging was thought to have cost the organisation £63m last year - although a clamp down had driven evasion rates down in recent years.
Steve Burton, TfL's director of community safety, enforcement and policing, said: "We know that our honest, fare paying passengers feel angry when they see others not paying for their journey and this should reassure them that we are tackling this issue head on."
